Supporting Evidence

The Supporting evidence module provides access to two types of supporting evidence: PDF documents that contain data ingested into the FEWS NET Data Warehouse and news articles from pre-determined news sources.

The following options are available for the Supporting evidence module:

  • Supporting documents

  • News articles

Supporting documents

The Supporting documents option navigates to Mayan, the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) module. Mayan stores supporting documents, such as original PDFs of data that has been extracted and ingested into the FEWS NET Data Warehouse.

News articles

The News articles option provides links to news articles from pre-determined news sources. Articles can be filtered by date, news source, and language. All articles include the following information:

  • Source: Name of the news source

  • Title: Title of the news article, in the original language

  • Published at: Date and time the news article was published, if specified in the article

  • Created: Date and time the news article was added to the FEWS NET Data Warehouse

  • Language code: Two-letter code that identifies the language the news article was published in

  • English summary: A short auto-generated summary of the news article written in English, regardless of the language the article was published in

  • Word count: The number of words in the article.

  • Keywords: Auto-generated keywords from the news article

  • Tags: A list of any associated tags

  • Link to article: A link to the original news article

Note: The system scans for new articles every two hours. Translations, summaries, and keywords are generated after the article is added to the FEWS NET Data Warehouse and therefore may not yet be available for articles that were added in the most recent scan.

There are two ways to view the content of a news article:

  • In the Link to article column, select the File icon. This link opens a new tab with the original news article. Note that if the article was published in a language other than English, this link will show the article in the original language.

  • In the Source column, select the name of the news source to open the Change article page which includes a summary and full text of the news article in both English and the original language. These are written in plain text and will not include images or figures published in the original article.
