The Population domain provides population demographic information such as census data, number of households, population calculations, estimates, and percentages of population at national and lower administrative boundaries.
The Population domain is broken into three sections:
1. Search and filter
Expand for more info about search and filter
You can filter the available data series using one or more of the following criteria:
Period: Filters by the collection/reporting period.
Geographic*: Filters by location of the population data. This filter aggregates items into a multi-level lists (e.g., admin 1 units are aggregated into countries, which are aggregated into regions). Selecting the higher-level item in the list will automatically select all the lower-level items in the list.
Indicator*: Filers by a metric of interest and allows for meaningful comparisons over time. The indicator options for the Population domain include options such as Number of households and Population estimate.
*You can search using any of the above criteria marked with an asterisk. You can also search, but not filter, by:
Geographic unit name and code: Name and/or code of a geographic area or point such as a portion of a country or other region delineated for a specific purpose, such as an Administrative Unit (Province, District, County, etc.), Livelihood Zone, or Market.
2. Data Selection
Expand for more info about data selection
Once you have applied your search terms and filters, you will be presented with a list of all available data series that match your criteria. A data series is a collection of related data points from a single data source that are viewable as a single row within a table of data. They represent the change over time of a specific indicator. Data series are presented in table format where each row represents a single data series.
The Population domain data selection table includes the following columns:
Country: The name of the country where the population data was reported.
:
Indicator: Metric of interest that allows for meaningful comparisons over time. The indicator options for the Population domain include options such as Number of households and Population estimate.
First: Period date for the first collection/reporting period in the data series.
Last: Period date for the last collection/reporting period in the data series.
Count: The number of data points in the data series.
Info: Hover over the information icon in a row to see more details including the data series ID and data source document.
In addition to selecting data series, you can interact with the data selection table in the following ways:
Selected data series can be viewed in the Selected tab.
You can clear your selections using the Clear Selected button.
By default the series are ordered alphabetically by country. You can click on the header of any column to sort by that column instead of by country.
Selecting one or more data series creates a savable dataset. For more information on creating and saving datasets, see Create and Save Datasets.
3. Data visualization and export
Expand for more info about data visualization and export options
The final section of the Population domain is data visualization and export. The Options button in this section presents the available options for aggregation or conversion of the data. The available parameters are:
Reporting Schedule: Provides reporting options on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis. The default reporting schedule is monthly.

The Table tab for the Population domain includes the following metadata:
country: Represents the national, dependent territory, or special area of geographical interest level administrative unit, standardized to ISO 3166 naming.
source_organization: The name or unique numeric id of the organization that provided the data source document.
source_document: The document used as the primary source of information or data.
fnid: FEWS NET ID, a unique code used to identify a specific geographic unit.
geographic_unit_full_name: The name of a geographic unit concatenated with the name of the country it belongs to. For example, Kayes, Mali, which is a geographic unit in Mali. For Units without countries, the full name might contain "International" in place of country.
geographic_unit_name: The name of a geographic unit. For example, Kayes, which is a geographic unit found in Mali.
locality_name:
admin_0: Represents the country level administrative unit.
admin_1: Represents the first level administrative units.
admin_2: Represents the second level administrative units.
admin_3: Represents the third level administrative units.
admin_4: Represents the fourth level administrative units.
population_group: The population group for which the crop production indicators are estimated and reported.
start_date: The start date of a collection period. For monthly data, this is the first day of the month of the reporting period. For example, data from January 2021 have a start_date of January 1, 2021.
period_date: The last day of the collection period. For monthly data, this is the last day of the month of the reporting period. For example, data from January 2021 have a period date of January 31, 2021.
indicator_group: A collection of indicators that measure a common dimension of a specified data domain (e.g., Morbidity, Mortality, Stunting).
geographic_group: Grouping of countries or regions based on the United Nations Standard Country or Area Codes for Statistical (UN M49) Classifications.
fewsnet_region: Grouping of countries or regions based on the FEWS NET regional Classifications. They are similar to the UN M49 Groups but they use the M49 code values between 900 and 999.
country_code: The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 two letter code for a country.
collection_schedule: The frequency of the data collections (e.g., monthly or weekly).
collection_date: Date the records were collected, specified in YYYY-MM-DD format.
status: The status of a data point value (i.e., Collected, Not Collected, Not Available, Missing Historic Data, Calculated, and Interpolated) for a specific collection period.
collection_status: The status of a data collection (i.e., Draft, Submitted, Under Review or Published).
publication_name: The name of the publication associated with the data collection. Typically, this is a publication containing a year's worth of data.
document_type: The type of Data Source Document (e.g., Market Product, Preliminary Crop Production Estimate, Rapid MUAC, SMART, 30x30). In particular, in the Crop Production domain the Document Type distinguishes between crop:preliminary and crop:final Data Source Documents with the same name.
Items with an asterisk ( * ) are specific to particular indicators and will only appear when they are relevant to your search and selection.
