The Spatial domain provides geographic and administrative boundary information including shapefiles, population estimates, and demography estimates including age and gender breakdowns.

The Spatial domain contains vector type data meaning that geographic unit set versions are used instead of data series.

The Spatial domain is broken into three sections: search and filter, data selection, data visualization and export.

Search and Filter

You can search the available Geo unit set versions using one or more of the following criteria:

  • Geographic unit set name:

  • Layer name:

You can filter the available Geo unit set versions using one or more of the following criteria:

  • Geographic: Filters by country.

  • Unit type: Filters by type of geographic unit which is a geographic area or point such as a portion of a country or other region delineated for a specific purpose, such as an Administrative Unit (Province, District, County, etc.), Livelihood Zone, or Market.

  • As of date: Filters all geographic unit set versions valid on the selected date. This includes all versions where the start date in on or before the selected date and either there is no version end date or the version end date is on or after the selected date.

Data Selection

Once you have applied your search terms and filters, you will be presented with a list of all available geographic unit set versions that match your criteria.

The Spatial domain data selection table includes the following columns:

  • Country: The country of the geographic unit set.

  • Name: The name of the geographic unit set.

  • Start: The first date that this unit set version is used.

  • End: The last date that this unit set version is used.

  • Download: Allows you to download information on that geographic unit set version. Formats vary based on what is available.

To visualize and export data, you will need to select one or more data series by checking the box at the beginning of the row containing that series.

In addition to selecting data series, you can interact with the data selection table in the following ways:

  • Selected data series can be viewed in the Selected tab.

  • You can clear your selections using the Clear Selected button.

  • By default the series are ordered alphabetically by country. You can click on the header of any column to sort by that column instead of by country.

Data Visualization and Export

Options

Options within the Spatial domain allows for aggregation or conversion of the data. The available parameters are:

  • Population data:

    • Geographic information only (This option is selected by default)

    • Include population estimate, including male/female breakdown

    • Include demography estimate, including full age/sex breakdown

  • Population source and year: Choose a different data source and year for population or demography estimates than the default.

    • Default population estimates are from LandScan 2019.

    • Default demography estimates are from WorldPop 2020.

  • Include shapefile attributes?: Selecting ‘yes’ for this option will include all attributes associated with the original shapefile, e.g., ADMIN0, ADMIN1, lzname, lzcode, etc.

    • Yes

    • No (This option is selected by default)

Data Visualization

Map

The Maps tab for the Spatial domain helps to visualize the geographic position and boundary lines of the selected Geo unit set version. The Map tab is also helpful for comparing various administrative levels and layers visually.

You can interact with the map in the following ways:

  • Zoom in and out using your mouse or the zoom buttons.

  • Click on items in the legend to include or exclude them from the map view.

Table

The Table tab for the Spatial domain includes the following metadata:

  • fewsnet_region: Grouping of countries or regions based on the FEWS NET regional Classifications. They are similar to the UN M49 Groups but they use the M49 code values between 900 and 999.

  • geographic_group: Grouping of countries or regions based on the United Nations Standard Country or Area Codes for Statistical (UN M49) Classifications.

  • fewsnet_region_id:

  • geographic_group_id:

  • id: Unique identifier assigned by the system.

  • fnid: FEWS NET ID, a unique code used to identify a specific geographic unit.

  • name:

  • full_name:

  • unit_type: A type of measurement of products. For instance, it could be weight or volume.

  • unit_type_code:

  • country: Represents the national, dependent territory, or special area of geographical interest level administrative unit, standardized to ISO 3166 naming.

  • admin_0: Represents the country level administrative unit.

  • admin_1: Represents the first level administrative units.

  • admin_2: Represents the second level administrative units.

  • admin_3: Represents the third level administrative units.

  • admin_4: Represents the fourth level administrative units.

  • area:

  • parent_id:

  • layer_id:

  • layer_name:

  • geographicunitsetversion_name:

  • start_date: The start date of a collection period. For monthly data, this is the first day of the month of the reporting period. For example, data from January 2021 have a start_date of January 1, 2021.

  • end_date:

  • country_code: The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 two letter code for a country.

Data Export

The Export tab includes the following options:

  • Download as: Provides a download of a static dataset. This will export only the data series that you have selected. Downloads are available in the following formats:

    • CSV

    • GeoJSON

    • Shapefile

  • Refreshable link: Provides a link to a live dataset. When a live dataset is accessed, the system automatically fetches the most current data from the server that match those saved parameters. Refreshable links are available in the following formats:

    • CSV

    • HTML

    • JSON

    • GeoJSON

    • XML

About

The About tab provides information about the sources of selected data. The source for geographic information will always be listed. If population or demography exports are being included, this tab will also display sources for this information.
